10 Gifts for the Coffee and Tea Lover this Holiday Season

Every year, we've come out with holiday gift ideas for the coffee and tea aficionado from brands we know and love. This time, we're doing things a little differently. Over the years, we have come across individuals and organizations who are doing amazing things for the coffee community— a community whose needs sometimes get overlooked. "Coffee workers are disproportionately impacted by mental health issues while also being very under-resourced, often uninsured or underinsured, often making wages that don't allow them to access the healthcare they need," shares Umeko Motoyoshi, founder of Umeshiso.

In addition to curating gift ideas for someone who takes their coffee and tea very seriously, we're also including ways you can give back to the coffee community. From a portable coffee maker, one-touch brewer, and ceremonial tea set, to community organizations doing cool things, we've got you covered. Happy shopping!

3.  Indonesia West Java Coffee Beans | Tanbrown Coffee

Marissa Childers and Ethan Darla met through an Asian coffee professionals call. Darla had just recently moved to Atlanta, and he and Childers clicked immediately as they shared the gripes they had with the coffee industry and how it could look different. They both cared heavily about where coffee comes from, how they can source and make coffee better while also changing the landscape of their local coffee community. The idea of starting a roastery together was borne. They called it Tanbrown Coffee.

Their Indonesia West Java coffee has some surprising characteristics in its creaminess and it's mild but present acidity. "We think it feels like brunch (or really a morning meal) with close friends," shares Childers and Darla.

12. Get Psyched

Photo c/o Umeshiso.

Coffee workers are disproportionately impacted by mental health issues while also being very under-resourced, often uninsured or underinsured, often making wages that don't allow them to access the healthcare they need. "I remember working as a barista and having panic attacks on bar while working a shift trying to make lattes — and that was considered normal. There wasn't a lot of space for any kind of conversation about what a mental health need might be. The culture can be very unforgiving," shares Umeko Motoyoshi, Founder of Umeshiso Coffee Supply and Get Psyched.

In partnership with the coffee nonprofit GoFundBean, Umeshiso founded Get Psyched to provide free psychiatric care for coffee workers. Once a year, they raise money and open up applications so that coffee workers can apply to receive a mini grant to pay for a psychiatry appointment. Get Psyched strives to create more visibility in the coffee industry around the importance of mental healthcare and creating safe spaces for people who have mental illnesses.

You can snag their fundraiser merch, still available on Umeshiso! All proceeds benefit Get Psyched.
